The Tibetan Environmental Protection Bureau has announced the closure of the northern side of Mount Everest in an effort to clean up the rubbish abandoned on the mountain. New restrictions on the north face of Everest may be imposed next spring to facilitate cleanup operations on the highest mountain in the world. This news was broken by the Tibetan Environmental Protection Bureau a few days ago and it comes in the wake of the suspended climbing permits, imposed last May to enable the Olympic Flame to reach the summit undisturbed. KATHMANDU (AFP) — Nepal has decided that May 29 -- the day the world`s highest peak was first conquered in 1953 -- will be marked as International Mount Everest Day, tourism officials said Friday. "The government has decided to commemorate the historic first ascent. This year will be the first time we celebrate the event and pay tributes to Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay," said tourism ministry spokesman Prem Rai. KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Nepal allowed the climbing season on Mount Everest to resume Friday after blocking access to hundreds of climbers so a Chinese team carrying the Olympic flame could ascend without the threat of protests. Tourism Ministry official Dinesh Adhikari said climbers who had been waiting at the Mount Everest base camp could now depart for higher ground, lifting a nine-day ban on ascents on the world`s tallest mountain. Statement by Mike Mortimer, President of UIAA (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation) The UIAA regrets the recent decision by the government of China to close the north side of Mount Everest to mountaineering expeditions for several weeks during May of this year. This restriction will effectively curtail all expeditions attempting to climb the mountain during the spring of 2008. The only exception appears to be the Chinese expedition that aims to carry the Olympic Torch to the summit as part of the preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in August. These Temporary Rules will only apply for the climbing period 1april-10 May Issuing of permit and the route for spring 2008 for Everest and Lhotse: A.The Government of Nepal and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation will only issue permits for the South East Ridge Route on Mount Everest for the Spring of 2008. Similarly, for Lhotse, permits will only be granted for the normal route. No other routes will be granted by the ministry such as the West Ridge, Southwest Face and the South Pillar. Two teams have taken permit for Dhaulagiri & Ama Dablam. Regarding Everest, the government will decide tomorrow (ed: Thursday local) in a positive way." Everest is difficult and dangerous mountain and climbing Everest is a big risk even in good conditions. Situation today shows us that everything is against successful climb in this year. It is possible to make summit at "any price", but in this nervous situation, expeditions` Leaders and members have big chance to make a mistake and get in a trouble. Chinese authorities have closed access to Everest and nearby Cho Oyu, suspending climbing permits until 10 May. The surprising news is currently making headlines across the world and in practice means that until the end of the spring season it will be possible to climb Chomolunga from the south only, i.e. from Nepal, All expeditions who have programmed their ascent for these two mountains will now have to look for other alternatives. About 200 hundred climbers from our Alpindustria Travel Company have visited the Southern Hemisphere during last two month. We sent many groups to Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Kosciuszko, and Carstenz, mountain peaks being part of Seven Summits programme. As well as to mountains of Ecuador and Patagonia. Big success rate was in all destination except Aconcagua. The bad weather in the region of Aconcagua had forced many of our climbers to abandon ascent. 11th of February four climbers led by Igor Svergun had reached the summit of Aconcagua. Reuters report that 76-year-old Min Bahadur Sherchan from Nepal plans to climb Everest aided by 12 Nepali sherpas before returning to a senior home he wants to open after summit. Sherchan reportedly wants to inspire young folks to climb. While it`s unclear what his previous climbing experience is; the Nepali will be in close race with Japanese Yuichiro Miura who became record holder as the oldest Everest summiteer in 2003 at the age of 70 and plans to repeat the ascent in 2008; at age 75.
